Report for 06/01/2010
Surf Fishing
With the arrival of June the surf will remain a good place to fish. Spanish Mackerel will hit about anything that moves along with the Bluefish. The Pompano fishing should remain reasonably good with some spotty days here and there all this month. . The skip jack (Ladyfish) will be here in ever increasing numbers and will provide a lot of action to all anglers. The weather in June is usually quite calm and that helps keep the Gulf very fishable. Trolling
Don’t overlook the pass for some oversized Redfish fun. The Reds should be available to bottom fisherman, but on occasion the Redfish get on top and can provide some excellent top water fishing. The Spanish mackerel will be in the pass and some King mackerel will be with them. The Bonita will be near the pass as well and offer some great light tackle fishing fun. Be sure to check out the buoys in and near the pass, this time of year the will hold some Cobia.
Offshore Fishing
The King Mackerel are on the beach all this month. Spanish mackerel will be there too, usually mixed with some Hard tails and Bluefish. . Slow trolling live baits, spoons or Duster rigs are very effective for all three species. The Grouper and Amberjack bite should remain good in 200 plus feet of water and possibly less. Don’t forget that Red STATE WATERS ONLY Snapper season opens on June 1, 2009 for both State and Federal waters. Red Snapper limit is still two fish per person. As warmer water continues to push its way to the north the Dolphin, Wahoo and other game fish will become more accessible.
Bay Fishing
All the fish will stay on the grass flats to feed and grow on the ever present bait fish and shrimp. They will remain here for the summer and through early fall. This is a good time to try some shallow water sight fishing early in the morning for Redfish. There is also some great top water fishing opportunities for the Speckled Trout as well. Flounder will be invading the bays and sounds along with Spanish Mackerel and Bonito. Black Drum and Shepshead can still be caught around all the bridge pilings, deep water docks and other structure in the bay and sound.
