American Shad - Alosa sapidissima

Family Clupeidae, HERRINGS

Description: Gray to greenish above, with silvery sides. Fins are soft with a dark spot just aft ofthe gill cover. Followed by a series of smaller black spots.

Similar fish: Other Shad, including Hickory, Alabama, and Gizzard.

Where found: Found at sea, but go upriver to spawn in mid January.
