Here we are a week into the fall season of Amberjack and Triggerfish season. I have been pleasantly surprised with the Amberjack bite for August, the fish seem to be nice sized and biting quite well. Unlike in spring when you can get them in nearshore spots most of the better fishing has been in the 180-400ft range, larger wrecks are producing better than the smaller wrecks. Triggerfish are all spread out for near shore to deeper water. I have heard from some of the kayak guys they have been getting keepers regular.

Near Shore Trolling

The king bite is somewhere between steady and good, the usual spots like the broken bottom, southeast rocks, 18’s and Nicky grounds have been producing. Chicken dolphin have been regular players along with plenty of Bonita.

Offshore Trolling

The Wahoo and Dolphin bite is regular right now; I would start a little farther offshore, at least to the nipple looking for temperature breaks. You can easily miss the fish by a few miles and have a Roff’s report to know where the color changes and Temp breaks is a must. White Marlin are starting to show up from the nipple down to the steps and over to the spur.

Bottom Fishing

Well, we have the usual suspects of Amberjack and Triggers as we talked about in the opening. The Grouper bite has stayed ok through the heat, and the Scamp bite is as good as it gets way southeast in the 750 bottom.

Deep Drop Bottom Fishing

Daytime Swordfishing is steady, and there are some Tilefish and Snowy Grouper action.

Bay Fishing

Again I have been surprised here with how good the Trout and Redfish action has been on the east end of the bay near 4-mile point, Hogtown Bayou, and 331 Bridge. The fishing is very early morning and late afternoon. At first light topwater baits are doing well, then a bit after that switch to deeper water and fish soft plastic swim or jerk baits.

Pier Fishing

It’s hot at the pier and I mean temperature wise. They are still getting the occasional King, Spanish, and Tarpon but have not heard of any great days. Plenty of Ladyfish and Hardtails and some day’s good numbers of throwback bull Reds.

Surf Fishing

Sharks are the main target at first light, dusk and early evening, during the day catch some Ladyfish and Hardtails and save them for shark bait after dark!!!
