October is finally here and that brings lots of special things, First and foremost is the 70th Annual Destin Fishing Rodeo which last the entire month of October and has prizes for almost any fish you can catch, It features divisions for Charter Boats, Party Boats, Private Boats, Kayaks, Paddle Boards, Pier, Bridge, Jetty, and Surf. There are also divisions for Ladies, Seniors, and Kids.

October is also when it starts to cool off just a bit and the fishing heats up! Time to get out there and get a big one. Also for the first time in a number of years, we have grass or weed lines and the Dolphin fishing has been off the hook good for weeks, there have been lines and patches of grass as close as 10-12 miles and bigger and better lines 35-40 miles close to the nipple.

Nearshore Trolling

Kings, dolphin and blackfin tuna are the main targets, troll live baits or plugs at varying depths along the surface to 50ft deep for the best action.

Offshore Trolling

Dolphin in the 8-25lb range have been awesome, Good numbers on wahoo and white marlin. We had one boat; the Mollie catch a really nice blue marlin 29 miles for the pass.

Bottom Fishing

Amberjack are the big target along with gag grouper, red grouper, scamp and Mingo snapper. You will find amberjack on wrecks made of steel in 180-350ft deep, Grouper are on the edges and larger rock formations 220-450ft deep.

Deep Water Bottom Fishing

Several daytime swordfish caught recently, plenty of tilefish on mud bottom and snowy grouper and barrel fish in hard bottom. For all the deep water fish you need to be in water 700-1800ft deep

Bay Fishing

The best action is on the east end of the bay from 4-mile point to 331 bridge, here you will find trout, reds, a few flounder and an occasional tarpon. Back towards town troll the Mid Bay Bridge for bull reds. Flounder gigging is picking up all around the bay.

Surf Fishing

A few pompano have started showing up. Ladyfish and hardtails during the day. Sharks and Bluefish after dark.

Pier Fishing

Mostly Spanish and Blues, this week should show an increase in the king mackerel action with nicer temps and lots of east wind!! A few reds and pompano in the shallows at the pier.
