Looks like we are finally going to be getting a weekend with no rain! Let's hope it stays that way and we can get out there for an awesome time on the water. Seas seem like they will also stay calm for us at around 2 ft or less. We will definitely take it!
The pier is getting the tarpon in hot and heavy. Large swim baits are the bait of choice for them, but you can also get a heck of a fight with smaller soft plastics on a 1-2oz jig head. Spanish are still running through as well as some king mackerel. Live hardtails seem to be firing them up, but frozen cigar minnows will also get them hitting your lines. Bonita, hardtails, ladyfish, and bluefish are hitting anything darting through the water with some speed such as gotcha plugs, diamond jigs, or jigfish. If you get closer to the shore you can get in on some pompano, whiting, or redfish action without dealing so much with the grass. Salty's Pompano Rigs tipped with some fish gum, fish bites, or live or frozen sand fleas and shrimp.
The beach, though it's beautiful, is hard to fish right now. There is grass all over and it makes it a heck of a mess to have to pull it off every few yards reeled in. It does appear to be patchy, so if you still want to give it a shot, get ready for a little bit of a walk until you find you a good spot without any grass. As above, Salty's Pompano Rigs with some fish bites, fish gum, or live or frozen sand fleas and shrimp are working great for the pompano, white, redfish, and black drum. Little black tip sharks and atlantic sharpnose sharks are also hitting the lines so don't be caught off guard if you happen to get one. Make sure to have a good set of pliers to help get the hook out. If you want to cast out a jigging line while your pompano rig does it's job, you can try some poppers or casting spoons to reel in while you wait.
The sound is getting awesome results first thing in the morning as well as closer to sunset. If you have access to a boat or kayak that will up your odds in the middle of the day. Sadly the water is just too hot right now in the shallows with the sun beating down so they will move to deeper waters until it cools down a little. Take you some live pinfish or zman soft plastics and throw them under docks to see if you can get you some redfish, black drum, or specks to slam the line. Flounder are also around so try some white curl tail grubs or live ghost shrimp and bounce them along the bottom under the docks and see if you can get one. Popping corks with some gulp or soft plastics are working great over the grass flats, especially first thing in the morning. If you want to try lures, mirrordine minnows or a skitterwalk will also get you some action.
The bay is very similar to the sound with all you need to do, but if you get closer to power lines and east river, you also get the chance for some gar or striped bass. Gulp baits or soft plastics with some procure scent added will help get them to you and slamming your lines.
Freshwater up in yellow river and blackwater river is also doing well, but be warned, you will want some bug spray because the yellow flies are still around and the mosquitos are everywhere due to all the rain. The bream are on fire as well as some nice largemouth, and channel cats. Using live minnows near some stumps and branches will get you a big ol cat worthy of feeding a big family. Using some trick worms in bruised banana or pumpkin seed are helping you reel in some bass worthy of pics to show off to your friends.
Are you heading out this weekend? Do you have any pics you would like for us to feature in our next report and printed for all our customers to see? Send them our way through email at [email protected] or come stop in and tell us all about it, we would love to see you!
I've only had a chance to fish off of the Navarro beach fishing pier. But I am planning on fishing in panama and destin. I lived in Pennsylvania, but grew up in Daytona Beach, and I plan on being down in Florida, hopefully sometime this year. For a ray spring and thank you for all of your...
When we're talking inshore, we generally mean less than 20 miles. Most of the kings are in the 1-15 mile range and depths of 70-125ft. Troll live cigar minnows or a mix of Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Rapala X-Raps.
