There are several ways to make two drop rigs for mingo and triggerfish. The bead rig and the dropper loop rig. In both cases my rigs are 36 inches long and have swivels on each end so there is no top or bottom, both ends are the same.
Sheepshead are winter fishing fun! They are plentiful, reasonably easy to catch, and are excellent table fare. It is easy to confuse sheepshead with black drum as both have the black and white bars. The easy way to tell the two apart is....
Spanish are fun on light tackle and are very good table fare. Their meat is much lighter than most mackerel and can be prepared in many different ways. They are great fried, smoked, or made into fish tacos......
While the blackfin tuna bite all day and night, the prime time is 30 minutes before sun up and the first three hours of daylight and the last three hours of daylight until about an hour after dark. During the time of the full moon there is normally a great bite right during the middle of the day from.....
The tarpon usually start to show up in May and last into late August or early September. The heart of the run, and when you can expect to have the best fishing, is June and July. Tarpon in our area range from....
Why so long? Well the water will be very warm and the longer leader gives the bait more room to try and escape the amberjack. In many cases even if the amberjack is not hungry their aggressive nature.....
Let’s start with buying quality bait rigs. If you ever find yourself on the bait banks outside the pass you will see some boats catching plenty of bait and others struggling.
Crab season is upon us. Truly it is always crab season as they don’t close but our prime time to catch them in the shallows is during the warmer months May - November.
For many anglers catching a shark is very high on their bucket list! We have so many varieties here locally you never really know which one you will catch.........
With the heat of the summer, the Amberjacks (aka Reef Donkeys) move to deeper waters. While there will be some in state water, most will be caught offshore in federal waters in depths on 160-400ft. The fish that are caught in state waters will be mostly throwback size. August 1st opens up the season for AJs, and Half Hitch wants to give you the best chance for catching them.
Swordfish are primarily considered nocturnal feeders. In recent years we have found they do feed in the day time, but instead of feeding near the surface less than 300ft deep where they migrate to at night, they are feeding at depths in excess of 200ft deep. Swords can be caught year-round, but we find the best and most consistent action between....
Along the Emerald Coast we have some of the best wahoo and dolphin fishing compared to anywhere in the world. One of the best parts about our fishery is the time span we have to go after them. Wahoo are almost year round and the best times are....
Fall brings a host of fishing opportunities with one of the many favorites being flounder fishing and flounder gigging. No matter which method you chose you will be in for a tasty treat for dinner....
Here along the Emerald Coast we have a opportunity for some of the most exciting fishing you'll ever do. While we catch cobia all year when bottom fishing, during the spring the cobia migrate along the coast in the shallows heading to the Louisiana delta to spawn from March to mid-May, and some years until June. Most of the cobia are caught after sight-casting on the fish as they migrate by in 10ft to 60ft of water. The emerald green water makes this exciting fishery possible.
Fishing for king mackerel is without doubt one of the most popular types of fishing along the Florida Panhandle. The kings usually arrive in late March when water temps reach 68 degrees and stay until mid-November. They are relatively easy to catch with some good techniques. They can be caught trolling or drifting. You can catch them on live, frozen baits and with a variety of lures.
Red Snapper are one of the most sought after, and definitely one of the top targets of all anglers along the Florida Panhandle. Recent years have seen a huge increase in size and numbers.
When we're talking inshore, we generally mean less than 20 miles. Most of the kings are in the 1-15 mile range and depths of 70-125ft. Troll live cigar minnows or a mix of Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Rapala X-Raps.
