Navarre Fishing Report 6-23-22

The weather sure has been hot and it’s going to stay pretty warm through this weekend. Seas should be around 2 feet offshore for those of you who want to get out for some more red snapper. Winds should be from the south-southeast so it’s going to be like a heater blowing on you. Be sure to bring plenty of water to keep yourselves from heat stroke.

We made it through our first weekend of snapper and while it started out with them spawning off the wrecks, they have moved back in and are there for you to get your limit. They are hungry and seem to be willing to eat anything, but if you try your hand at some chum to get those bigger ones off the wreck, throw you down some live minnows and keep it up a little more in the water column and let them come to you. Squid is always a good way to go, if you have some that are whole, you can hook it it up and drop it down and be ready for a nice grouper or snapper to be on your line. Sadly there are still plenty of AJs and triggers being caught but their season has closed so you have to throw then back. Spadefish have been pretty plentiful on the inshore wrecks. It can be hard to get them to bite, but live shrimp is one way to get them to eat if you happen to be able to find any. You can also try to get some ghost shrimp and throw them at them. They have no size limit, but they have had some hefty weight to them recently and are great eating. Mangrove snapper and lane snapper have also been reeled up, you can fish for them similar to the red snapper or mingo snappers. Throw you down a 2 hook rig with some cigs or cut squid. Slow pitch setups are also great for these situations. You get you some fish for the cooler and a good workout while you are at it.

The pier is doing well in spurts. With this hot water, it’s definitely on a hit or miss basis. Spanish are still running pretty well, so are hardtails, bonita, bluefish, ladyfish, red drum, pompano, whiting, jack crevalle, king mackerel and the occasional tarpon hook up. Gotcha plugs are always a good way to go, as well as having some large swimbaits on hand for those tarpon. Albino Ghost xraps are an excellent choice to fling out there when the kings and even Spanish mackerel are running through. We have higher strength sabiki rigs to help you get those toothy fish running through. Bait fish are moving through so be sure to have you some smaller hook size sabikis to get you loaded up.

The surf while you can catch pompano, whiting, ladyfish, hard tails, bluefish, and jacks, it is hard to do so just because the grass is still a nightmare out there. The Sargassum grass moved out and the June grass has moved in. If you want to try your hand, be ready to pull the grass off as you reel in, but pompano rigs fished on the bottom are going to work best. Top water plugs are going to get all gummed up.

The inshore is slowing down if you are going during the heat of the day. That water is HOT! If you want to get out on the water, try early morning or later evening as they are running the shallows and flats in search of those bait fish moving in to feed while the sun isn’t beating down. Shrimp is in that time of year where you are not going to find any. Try your hand at some pinfish or croakers for live bait option. Gulp bait is always a good way to go this time of year especially if you are land locked, you have to get the fish to want to come to you and scent in the water will definitely do that. If you are able to get out on a boat or a kayak, zman soft plastics or topwater plugs thrown over some grass flats or under deeper docks will help get those fish on your line.

Bass are still biting well up in the rivers and freshwater lakes if you want to head up north a little. Pickerel, bowfin, and bream are also hitting the lines. Like the inshore, you will want to go more in the morning or evenings when the water near the shorelines is a little cooler for them to move in and feed. Live worms are working great as well as chatter baits, beetle spins, and soft plastic worms.
